Don’t forget about your first love!

on

Hey guys! I hope you’re doing well and staying safe.

I was on Instagram and happened to tune into a live stream, where there were two believers talking about their journey in Christ. One had been born and raised in church (like me) and another was new to Christ, had only just recieved Christ in lockdown! As I sat and listened, I was just astonished at the wisdom that was in the new believer and the hunger that she had for Christ.

Personally I never really had a coming to Christ moment, as I’ve always really been in the church, and as I’ve grown older I’ve just made decisions to take my walk seriously, leaving certain things behind. But, I realised what can happen is that the way we are when we’re still growing Christ can alter. What happens is that we become comfortable, and we stop seeking and we stop praying as much, we begin to lose the intentionality. We forget our first love.

This isn’t something that’s new, even in the bible this happened. Revelations 2: 1-7 Jesus is sending a message to the Church in Ephesus (the one where Paul was writing the letter to the Ephesians). He tells them that they’ve preserved and endured hardships, not growing weary, staying in the truth (verse 3). But verse 4 “But I have this [charge] against you, that you have left your first love [you have lost the depth of love that you first had for Me]. 5 So remember the heights from which you have fallen, and repent [change your inner self – your old way of thinking, your sinful behaviour – seek God’s will] and do the works you did at first [when you first knew Me]; otherwise I will visit you and remove your lampstand (the church, its impact) from its place – unless you repent.”

So let’s unpack this scripture. These saints had persevered after facing hardships, and they had stayed in the truth. However, despite that, they had started slipping along the way, on the inside. They had fallen from their love that they first had for Christ.

This is something very real that happens, and it can be applied in our relationship with God, and the way we treat others too! But Christ gave this warning (and I think it applies to us too) to turn back. We can be so focused on the outward appearance but not looking at our hearts, not staying consistent.

I really feel like God was speaking to me today, because I also heard a word about Character and having the character of God! It’s easy to let life get in the way, but I hope this is a reminder that let your first love that you had for God remain, keep up those standards that you once had. Keep on praying to God with the same hunger that you did when things were rough. Don’t just go to God when times are hard but talk to Him daily !

I hope you have an amazing weekend. May God bless you x
